About 62% of U.S. adults, or about 165 million people, own stocks either directly or through a retirement account such as a 401(k).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Canada\"><\/span>Canada<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>About 20.34 million people participate in the stock market, primarily through retirement accounts such as RRSPs and TFSAs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"China\"><\/span>China<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data from China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation Limited shows that as of the end of June this year, the number of A-share investors has exceeded 240 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"India\"><\/span>India<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of early 2025, about 109 million Indians were registered as investors in the Indian stock market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Japan\"><\/span>Japan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, the number of individual accounts opened in the Japanese stock market increased by 3.08 million year-on-year, reaching a total of 59.81 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Taiwan\"><\/span>Taiwan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data from the Taiwan Stock Exchange, the cumulative number of accounts opened at the end of 2023 was 12.51 million, accounting for 53.42% of the total population, and the number of actual traders reached an all-time high of 5.64 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"South_Korea\"><\/span>South Korea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the number of active stock accounts in South Korea exceeded 60 million for the first time, 8 million more than the total population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hong_Kong\"><\/span>Hong Kong<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Finder\u2019s Global Investment Adoption Survey, approximately 3.7 million people in Hong Kong will actively own stocks by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Singapore\"><\/span>Singapore<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Singapore Online Investment Report 2023 showed that 264,000 Singaporeans traded stocks and ETFs online in the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thailand\"><\/span>Thailand<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), as of early 2025, there were approximately 3.17 million unique individuals in Thailand with securities trading accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Malaysia\"><\/span>Malaysia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of early 2025, about 3.17 million Malaysians have opened securities trading accounts, accounting for about 9.5% of the country&#8217;s population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vietnam\"><\/span>Vietnam<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of 2024, approximately 9.2 million Vietnamese individuals will have securities accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indonesia\"><\/span>Indonesia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of January 2025, approximately 15.16 million Indonesians are registered as capital market investors, holding a Single Investor Identification Number (SID).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"UK\"><\/span>U.K.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 33% of UK adults invest in the stock market, both directly and through retirement funds and individual savings accounts (ISAs). The UK population in 2022 is 67.6 million, so there are 22.3 million UK adults investing in stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Germany\"><\/span>Germany<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to statistics from the German Securities Institute (Deutsches Aktieninstitut), the total number of investors in 2020 increased by 28% from 2019 to 12.4 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"France\"><\/span>France<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2024, approximately 1.4 million French residents actively participate in the stock market, buying or selling stocks at least once a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sweden\"><\/span>Sweden<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/content\/dam\/oecd\/en\/publications\/reports\/2025\/04\/the-swedish-equity-market_061ab7c8\/0640a75c-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The level of retail investment in Sweden is very high. At the end of 2023, there were 3.8 million unique dedicated investment savings account.<\/a> Sweden has the highest proportion of retail investors among its population in the EU.
