Founding
Bain Capital is a leading U.S. private equity firm. It was founded in 1984 by Mitt Romney and others. Headquartered in Boston, it has offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, London, and Munich.
Origins of the Company
Bain Capital’s parent company, Bain & Company, was founded in 1973 by William Bain. Romney and some of his Bain Capital colleagues previously worked at Bain & Company. Bain & Company was the birthplace of Bain Capital; in the summer of 1984, Bain & Company invested $37 million to establish Bain Capital.

Bain Capital currently has 200 professionals and provides private equity and add-on acquisitions to over 250 companies across multiple industries worldwide. Bain Capital is an international private equity firm managing over $75 billion in assets, with investments in private equity, public equity, fixed income and credit, publicly traded equity hedge funds, and leveraged debt asset management.

Since its inception, Bain Capital has invested in or acquired companies including AMC Theatres, Artisan Entertainment, Aspen Education Group, Apex Tools Group, Brookstone, Burger King, Burlington Stores, Canada Goose, DIC Entertainment, Domino’s Pizza, DoubleClick, Dunkin’ Donuts, D+M Group, Guitar Center, HCA Healthcare, Clear Channel Communications, Turbo Engine Industries, KB Toys, Sealy, Sports Authority, Staples, Toys “R” Us, Virgin Australia, Warner Music Group, Fingerhut, Athenahealth, The Weather Channel, Apple Leisure Group, SunGard Data Systems, NXP, Sensata Technologies, FCI, Sun Telephone, Applied Systems, and MEI Conlux, among others. Around 2002, Bain Capital also invested in Chinese internet companies such as Sina, Baidu, and Tencent.
